Natalie’s Warehouse

Peacock Chair // Chalkboards & Mirrors

My inspiration for this shoot actually started with one piece of furniture: A LA CRATE’s majestic peacock chair. When Andrew and I met to discuss what we wanted to do for our shoot, I brought a mood board with inspiration images of clothing I wanted to style (a feminine tomboy assortment that felt reminiscent of what I like to wear) and a picture of the chair. I have been eyeing this chair since it made its debut in the A LA CRATE inventory! We tossed around some ideas on how we could incorporate it into a shoot at a variety of locations, but then it dawned on us that maybe we could actually use the new A LA CRATE space as the location. I had just seen a great photoshoot done by one of my styling idols, Kelly Framel, where she had used another fantastic vintage rental company in Brooklyn, called Patina, as the backdrop for the story of her shoot and was inspired to use A LA CRATE in a similar way. With the peacock chair as my inspiration, I started to put together some small vignettes in my head – little spaces that you would see in your own home: a reading nook or a living room to lounge in. The story of the shoot became a little home set within an industrial warehouse where our model Natalie was the heroin.

In addition to the vignettes we used the fantastic wall of glassware in the A LA CRATE showroom as a backdrop for a fourth spot in the shoot.

One of the things I love about what Sarah and Jeff do at A LA CRATE, is how they find ways to make “old stuff” modern. I love dabbling in styling products and interiors and nothing makes my heart go pitter patter quite like making something vintage look modern. For the styling of these vignettes I really challenged myself to make all the pieces I used feel modern – a victorian couch with an on-trend cowhide rug, a drop leaf farmhouse-style table with layers of texture and personal details, the peacock chair with a bohemain pouf and some greenery. Old can become new! As you plan your next party or imagine your next photoshoot, I hope that this photoshoot will not only inspire you to rent some of A LA CRATES’s amazing rentals, but also provide some inspiration for your own modern vintage vignette!

*A note on the beautiful runner in the kitchen vignette: this lovely piece is availble to rent via Midwest Textiles but currently has a home in the ALC showroom for interested renters. Sarah & Jeff will happily coordinate with them regarding pickup/delivery if you rent from both businesses.
